One cold radiator usually means a local problem
If every other radiator heats normally, the boiler and main circulation pump are at least moving heat around the system. The problem is more likely to be the valves, trapped air, sludge or local pipework serving the cold radiator. Feel the pipes cautiously as the heating warms. If both remain cold, water may not be reaching the radiator. If one pipe becomes hot and the other stays cool, flow through the radiator may be restricted.
Check the thermostatic valve before blaming the radiator
A TRV can stick closed after a period of little use. Turning the head to maximum does not help if the pin beneath is seized. A plumber can remove the head and check the pin safely. The valve on the other end, usually a lockshield, may also have been closed during decorating or balancing. Do not open it wildly without noting its original position because that can disturb the balance of the rest of the system.
Air gives a different temperature pattern
A radiator containing air is commonly warm at the bottom and cold across the top. Bleeding can restore circulation if that is the only fault, but make sure the heating system pressure remains correct afterwards. A radiator that is hot at the top but cold at the bottom points more towards sludge or restricted internal waterways. The temperature pattern is therefore a useful diagnostic clue rather than simply a comfort complaint.
Sludge can affect one older radiator first
Corrosion products settle where flow is poor. An older radiator on the end of a circuit may become partly blocked while others still perform reasonably well. Removing and flushing that radiator can be worthwhile before considering whole-system cleaning. If several radiators show the same cold-bottom pattern, a wider water-quality problem becomes more likely. The proposed remedy should match the number of affected emitters.
Balancing matters after system changes
If the radiator stopped heating after new radiators, a boiler change or other alterations, water may be taking easier routes through the system. Balancing uses the lockshield valves to distribute flow more evenly. Simply opening the cold radiator fully may not solve the problem if nearer radiators are taking most of the circulation. A heating engineer can assess the system as a whole rather than treating each radiator in isolation.
What to describe when asking for help
Say whether the radiator is completely cold or just cold at the top or bottom. Mention whether both valves move, whether other radiators are normal and whether the boiler pressure is stable. If the problem followed recent heating work, include that. A photograph of the valves plus your description of the temperature pattern gives the contractor a better starting point than the phrase “radiator not working”.
Do not judge the result the moment the boiler starts
Heating systems take time to settle, especially after balancing or after a radiator has been flushed and refitted. Let the system reach normal temperature and compare the problem radiator with similar ones elsewhere. It should warm across most of its surface without a persistent cold band or completely cold return pipe. If valves were adjusted for balancing, do not immediately open them all again because one room feels slower for the first few minutes. The aim is even, useful heat around the house rather than making one radiator hot at the expense of the rest. If the problem returns after a few days, note whether it is air, sludge or lack of flow that appears to be recurring.
If the radiator is in an extension or loft conversion, say so. Long pipe runs and later additions can be more sensitive to balancing and circulation than radiators close to the boiler. That background can explain why one emitter struggles even though the rest of the original system seems normal.
If the room thermostat is nearby, remember that a warm room can shut the boiler down before a slow radiator fully heats. Testing with the heating calling for heat gives a fairer picture of whether water is actually reaching the radiator.
