Needing to bleed the same radiator repeatedly is a clue
A small amount of trapped air after system work is normal, but a radiator that fills with air again every few days or weeks deserves investigation. The gas may be entering because the system is drawing in air, because corrosion is producing gas internally or because pressure is being allowed to fall too low. Bleeding treats the symptom by releasing the pocket at the top; it does not explain why the pocket keeps returning.
Watch the boiler pressure on a sealed system
Each time you bleed a radiator, some water pressure is lost. If the system already has a leak or pressure-control problem, repeated bleeding can make the gauge fall further. Note the pressure when the heating is cold and see whether it changes over several days. If you are topping up frequently as well as bleeding radiators, tell the heating engineer. That combination is more informative than either symptom on its own.
Corrosion can create gas inside the system
Where inhibitor levels are poor, corrosion between metals in the heating circuit can produce gas that collects in radiators. The water may also contain black magnetite sludge. One sign can be a radiator that releases gas repeatedly even though there is no obvious external leak. A contractor may check water condition and whether the system has been properly treated rather than simply replacing the radiator valve.
Air can enter through faults on older open-vented systems
Traditional heating systems with a small feed-and-expansion tank can draw air in if the pump arrangement, water level or venting is wrong. Pumping-over into the tank can also oxygenate the water. If the problem began after a new pump or other heating alteration, mention that timing. The cause may be in the system layout rather than the radiator that happens to collect the air.
Do not keep bleeding indefinitely without finding out why
Repeatedly releasing air may keep one room warm temporarily, but it can hide an underlying leak or circulation problem. If the same radiator becomes cold at the top again and again, arrange a broader check. The contractor should consider pressure, leaks, system water condition and venting as appropriate to the installation. A one-off bleed is maintenance; constant bleeding is evidence.
Useful observations before a visit
Record which radiators collect air, how often you bleed them and whether the boiler pressure falls at the same time. Note the colour of any water that escapes from the bleed screw and whether the heating has recently been drained. Tell the engineer if you hear gurgling elsewhere in the system. These details can help distinguish trapped commissioning air from a system that is continually introducing or generating gas.
The real test is whether the air stays away
After the underlying cause has been dealt with, note the date and leave the radiator alone unless the top actually becomes cold again. Releasing a bleed screw out of habit makes it harder to tell whether the system is stable. On a sealed system, check the boiler pressure periodically while cold. If it remains steady and the radiator stays fully warm, that is good evidence the problem has been resolved. If gas returns quickly, tell the engineer what has changed since the previous visit. Repeated air in the same location can be a useful diagnostic marker, so keeping a simple record is more valuable than repeatedly venting it and forgetting when it happened.
If more than one radiator needs frequent bleeding, record which ones and in what order the problem appears. Air repeatedly collecting at the highest parts of the system can provide a useful clue about how it is entering or circulating, especially after extensions or changes to the heating layout.
If the bleed screw itself is damp or crusted, mention that too. A small leak at the vent can let water escape and may also contribute to the cycle of pressure loss and repeated attention at the same radiator.
