Why Has One Tap Suddenly Lost Water Pressure?

What can cause weak flow from a single tap, how to tell whether the fault is local to the tap and what a plumber may need to check.

One weak tap usually points to a local fault

If every other outlet in the house has normal flow, a single weak tap is unlikely to be caused by the incoming mains supply. The restriction is probably close to that tap. A blocked aerator on the end of the spout is one of the simplest causes, especially after plumbing work has disturbed debris. Flexible tap tails can kink, isolation valves can remain partly closed, and cartridges can clog internally. Compare hot and cold flow separately; if only one side is poor, the fault is even more likely to lie in that branch of the supply.

Check the simple things first

Unscrew the aerator only if it is designed to come off easily, then inspect it for scale or grit. Make sure any isolation valve below the sink is fully open, but do not force a stiff valve because old ones can begin to leak around the spindle. Look at flexible hoses for sharp bends. If the problem began immediately after a repair elsewhere in the house, debris may have travelled through the pipe and lodged in the tap. If the flow has reduced gradually over months, limescale or internal wear is a more plausible explanation.

Hot and cold behaving differently narrows the search

A mixer tap can disguise the fact that only one supply is restricted. Run the tap fully cold and then fully hot. Weak hot flow with normal cold flow might be linked to a local valve, the hot-water system or a blocked connection. Weak cold flow only at that tap is usually easier to trace. If both hot and cold are equally poor but nearby taps are strong, the tap body, aerator or shared flexible connections deserve attention. This simple comparison can save a plumber from starting with the wrong part of the system.

When the problem is not really pressure

People often use the word pressure when they mean flow. A tap may have reasonable pressure behind it but only a small volume of water can get through because something is restricting the opening. That is why a blocked aerator can make a healthy supply feel weak. True pressure problems usually affect more than one outlet, particularly when several taps or appliances run together. If the whole property has changed, or the problem follows work by the water company, the investigation should move away from the tap itself.

What a plumber may need to do

Once obvious restrictions are ruled out, a plumber may disconnect the tap supply to compare flow before it enters the fitting. That separates a tap fault from a pipework fault very quickly. They may replace a blocked cartridge, renew a damaged flexible tail or change a faulty isolation valve. If old galvanised pipework or heavy internal scaling is involved, a local tap repair may reveal a wider issue. The aim is to identify where the restriction begins rather than replace parts simply because they are easy to reach.

Useful information when requesting a quote

Say whether the weak flow affects hot water, cold water or both. Mention when it started and whether any plumbing work happened shortly beforehand. Compare the problem tap with another outlet nearby and tell the plumber whether the difference is dramatic or slight. A short video can be more helpful than a still photograph because it shows the actual flow. If the tap is a specialist or designer fitting, include the brand if you know it; unusual cartridges can turn an otherwise simple call-out into a parts-ordering job.

Avoid paying for a cure before the cause is known

Weak flow at one tap is a good example of why diagnosis matters more than a shopping list of parts. Replacing the tap will not help if the real restriction sits in an isolation valve or a kinked flexible hose. Equally, changing a valve is pointless if the aerator is simply packed with debris. If a plumber proposes a replacement, ask what test showed that the restriction is inside that component. Where the problem followed recent plumbing work, mention the exact date because disturbed grit can travel through the supply and lodge in a fitting. After the repair, compare the flow with a nearby tap while the plumber is still there. You should be able to see a clear improvement rather than relying on the assumption that a new part must have solved it.
