Hot and cold water may come from very different sources
A strong cold tap and weaker hot tap can be completely normal on some older systems because the cold is mains-fed while the hot comes from a storage cistern with much less pressure. In other homes, particularly those with combi boilers or unvented cylinders, the two should be more closely matched. Before treating the difference as a fault, establish how the hot water is produced. The system design sets the baseline for what is realistically achievable.
A sudden change suggests a restriction or component fault
If the hot tap used to flow well and has become noticeably weaker, look for a new restriction. Isolation valves, flexible connectors, tap cartridges and filters can all reduce flow. On mixer taps, a blocked hot inlet may leave the cold side perfectly normal. If several hot taps throughout the house have weakened together, the restriction is more likely to sit at the boiler, cylinder or shared hot-water pipework.
Scale affects hot-water components particularly badly
Heated water encourages limescale to form in hard-water areas. Small passages in taps, thermostatic valves and some water heaters can gradually narrow. A single scaled tap may be easy to service, while widespread poor hot flow needs a broader look at the system. Do not assume descaling chemicals should be poured through domestic pipework; the correct approach depends on which component is restricted.
Combination boilers have flow limits of their own
A combi can only heat a certain amount of water per minute to the required temperature. That limit is not the same as a blockage. If one hot tap is fully opened, the boiler may deliver a strong but finite flow. If all hot outlets are weak even at moderate demand, the boiler or hot-water path may need attention. Appliance-related diagnosis should be handled by the appropriate heating engineer where necessary.
Compare more than one outlet
Test the kitchen hot tap and another hot outlet separately. If only one is weak, the local tap and its connections are the sensible starting point. If every hot tap is affected, note whether the cold mains remains normal. This simple comparison can prevent a plumber replacing an expensive mixer tap when the actual restriction is shared by the whole hot-water system.

Tell the plumber what type of boiler or cylinder you have, whether the weakness is new and which hot outlets are affected. Mention any recent valve changes, bathroom work or boiler servicing. If only one mixer tap is slow, include a photograph of its connections beneath the sink or basin. The contractor can then decide whether to investigate the tap locally or start at the hot-water source.
Judge any improvement against the type of system you actually have
On a gravity-fed hot-water system, the repaired hot tap may still be slower than the mains cold because that is how the system is designed. The useful comparison is whether it has returned to its previous normal flow, not whether both sides are identical. On a combi or unvented arrangement, a much larger difference may justify further investigation. Ask the plumber what flow they expect from the system and whether the restriction they found was local or shared. If an old mixer tap is replaced, run hot and cold separately before the job is finished. That confirms the improvement came from the repair rather than from a change in how the lever is being used.
If the hot water is supplied from a cylinder, also mention whether upstairs and downstairs outlets behave differently. Height and pipe route can affect gravity-fed flow. That comparison helps distinguish the limitations of the system from a new local restriction that has appeared at one tap.
A plumber may also compare flow with the tap aerator removed if the design allows it. That can quickly show whether the restriction is at the spout or somewhere further back in the hot supply.
